Chairwoman Johnson Statement on Unproven Claims of Chemicals that Prevent and Treat COVID-19
(Dallas, TX) – Earlier this week, inaccurate rumors began to spread about chloroquine and other chemicals’ supposed ability to protect against and treat COVID-19. Following the spread of those claims, reports emerged of individuals in multiple countries ingesting chemicals to prevent contracting the virus. On Monday, one American was reported dead and his wife was put under critical care after both ingested chloroquine phosphate. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved any medications for this use, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the best way to protect oneself from the virus is by self-isolating and handwashing.
Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) made the following statement.
“As Chairwoman of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee and a former registered nurse, I am alarmed by the reports that Americans are attempting to self-treat and self-inoculate against COVID-19 with pharmaceuticals and other chemicals that have not passed clinical trials for safe and efficient treatment of the virus. I implore all Americans to not experiment with medications or other chemicals and listen to the advice of reputable health agencies and self-isolate as the primary means of protecting oneself against COVID-19. The research community has time-tested procedures to test and approve science-based treatments. While our science agencies work on ensuring the safety and efficacy of any proposed treatment, please consult with your doctor before taking any measures that go beyond what is recommended by the CDC.”
